There’s nothing like #summertimechi! So, it’s no surprise that Chicago has a plethora of amazing ice cream shops you can indulge in. Here are 5 places that will make your tastebuds happy!
832 W. Randolph St.
BomboBar is incredible—it’s both an Instagram-lover and dessert-lover’s dream! This walk-up window, nestled in Chicago’s West Loop neighborhood, is famous for their bombolonis (hole-less Italian doughnuts). As a treat, you can mix and match flavors to build your own milkshake, housemade gelato or ice cream cone with over 25+ toppings to choose from.
This place is also dog-friendly, so if you happen to have a fur baby with you, make sure you grab them a woof-cream or dairy-free gelato.
What I ordered: Sherbet and strawberry in a waffle cone with sprinkles and a bomboloni
9233 S. Western Avenue
I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the infamous Original Rainbow Cone. However, this place is not just an ice cream shop; it’s been a Chicago staple for over 95 years! Of course, this shop’s signature is the rainbow ice cream, which stacks Orange Sherbet, Palmer House, Strawberry, Chocolate and Pistachio together in what quite literally tastes like a magical summer. Original Rainbow Cone believes that life is too short for just one flavor, and I couldn’t agree more. There are now officially 3 places you can get your fix, but I personally frequent the Beverly location. If you are visiting Chicago for the first time, I’d argue this place is not to be missed.
What I ordered: Rainbow in a cup (of course!)
5226 S. Harper Street
Kilwins in Hyde Park is a Black-owned/operated high-quality ice cream shop that is a neighborhood hot spot. As soon as you step foot in the door, you’ll be greeted with sweet aromas and decadent fudge. They hand-craft all of their waffle cones, as well as their delicious chocolate and caramels! Kilwins offers great flavors like Cake Batter, Georgia Peach, Cappuccino Chocolate Chip, and other options perfect for the whole family. If you’re in the area, this shop is always worth a stop.
What I ordered: Butter Pecan in a waffle bowl
1159 W. Taylor St.
Kurimu is a new spot in the city that specializes in ice cream and coffee inspired by Asia, taking specific cues from Korea and Taiwan.
Their Instagram oozes with photos of satisfyingly-symmetrical soft-serves in all their glory! Seriously, if you haven't seen it you have to check it out. What makes this place so unique is that the flavors are always changing, so there’s always a reason to go back.
What I ordered: Hojicha and taro swirl in a red velvet waffle cone
46 E. 47th St.
Shawn Michelle’s is a Bronzeville gem. This ice cream parlor is also Black-owned and operated. The staff is super friendly, and the shop hits you with a traditional, nostalgic vibe as soon as you step inside. If you want something special, this place definitely delivers with their handcrafted ice cream flavors (made with love). From Banana Pudding to Honey Cinnamon Graham Cracker and Pound Cake, it’s like you just stepped into grandma’s kitchen! They also offer vegan ice cream options and other desserts like a cobbler sundae, so there’s really something for everyone.
What I ordered: Lunchroom butter cookie on a waffle cone
